Breast augmentation which is technically known as augmentation mammoplasty is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breast. This can be done for a number of reasons: to enhance the body contour of a woman who, for personal reasons, feels her breasts are too small; to correct reduction in breast volume after pregnancy; to balance a difference in breast size; and as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery. A breast implant is a silicone shell filled with either silicone gel or salt-water solution known as saline. An incision can be made either in the arm pit, around periareolar (around the colored portion of the nipple) or under the breast itself. Implants are usually placed behind the muscle or will be placed under the breast tissue in indicated cases.
