While a spare tire is essential for a car, it’s entirely unwelcome when it shows up on one’s body. Not only does a spare tire make one look out of shape, it can be dangerous for one’s health. It is an indication of obesity, which can lead to issues like diabetes, heart problems, and even cancer.
If you have excess abdominal fat that you would like to get rid of, you may have tried exercise, diet, and other methods. Not everyone benefits from these methods, and sometimes, it just isn’t possible to get rid of excess belly fat on one’s own. In such cases, liposuction is an effective solution.
Liposuction to Remove That Spare Tire
Liposuction is a surgical procedure wherein excess stubborn fat is removed from the body. The most common type of liposuction performed is tumescent liposuction. This technique helps to avoid the need for general anesthesia, making complications less likely. It also limits blood loss during the procedure.
Tumescent liposuction can be carried out on any part of the body where there’s excess fat, not just the abdomen. It can also be performed on the breast area, hips, back, thighs, flanks, knees, upper arms, buttocks, neck, and even the face.
Tumescent Liposuction – The Procedure
Prior to tumescent liposuction, a consultation with Dr. Lentz is needed. During the consultation, the health of the patient is determined to decide whether they are a qualified candidate for this procedure. Smoking and the use of blood thinners will need to be stopped prior to the liposuction procedure in order to prevent any risks.
The procedure is done under local anesthesia. A tumescent solution containing a local anesthesic is injected into the tissues to numb them for the duration of the procedure. It also prevents post-operative pain for a time, since its effects last for 24 hours.
Dr. Lentz makes a small incision in the treatment region. A cannula is then inserted. A cannula is a thin tube that is connected to a vacuum pump. After the cannula’s end is used to loosen the stubborn fat, suction is used to remove the fat cells from the body. This is done very carefully to ensure natural-looking results with minimal post-surgical bruising and swelling.
Once the treatment is complete, the incision is closed. Sutures may or may not be used, depending on the case.
Results of Tumescent Liposuction
Once the liposuction procedure is complete, medications and instructions for care of the operated area are provided. Follow-up visits to Dr. Lentz’s office are required in order to monitor the patient’s recovery. Since the incisions are smaller than those used in other procedures, the patient can resume their normal routine within a couple of days.
Improvements can be seen immediately in the form of a contoured and sculpted abdomen without embarrassing excess fat. Post-surgical swelling will obscure the full results until it has ameliorated, so it will be necessary to be patient for a time.
